Tonight's FAA Seminar presented by Luke Garrison - NE Regional Office fo Airports, was an interesting look into the Federal airport construction for the coming year.

Some of the major upcoming work:
  • Nantucket: Relocating Taxiway G, new Taxiway F, and decommissioned Runway 12/30
  • Gardner: Rehab the runway and taxiway, relocation and removal of some taxiways. This will have significant impact.
  • … and many others

The seminar reviewed in detail the terminology and overall budget allocations for airport construction. Breaking it down by category:
  • Rehab is work done to extend the life of existing infrastructure, milling and paving, etc. Rougly 25% of the budget
  • Reconstruction is more extensive work - excavating and rebuilding several feet deep, with expected life of 20+ years. Roughly 26% of the budget.
  • Standards is work done to bring airports into compliance with recent safety guidelines: Removing or relocating taxiways for better clearance and reduced incursions, obstacle removal, etc. Roughly 24% of budget.
More details can be found at:

Here is a quick list of upcoming 2022 work. (Note that this is a list of budgetary approved projects. Actual work can extend into subsequent years).

Connecticut

  • Robertson - AWOS-III upgrade, PAPA for Runways 02 and 20, and updated Segmented Circle / wind cone.
  • Bradley Obstruction removal for Runway 6
  • Meriden-Markham Rehab the terminal apron

Massachusetts

  • Nantucket Relocate Taxiway G away from runway for improved safety. Convert the current apron to a Taxiway F, making it part of the movement area. Decommissioned runway 12/30
  • Boston Rehab Taxiway's Mike south and Kilo
  • Airnav:KEWB[New Bedford]] Apron reconstruction
  • Gardner Major runway and taxiway work. Taxiways intersecting with the runway will be moved so that no ramp area has a straight path onto a runway. This reduces chances of incursions.
  • Hyannis Runway 06/24 will be reconstructed up to but not impacting the intersecting runway.
  • Lawrence Rehab Taxiway C to end of Runway 32 and remove Taxiway Delta.
  • Norwood Relocate Taxiway C to eliminate direct access to the runway from the ramp.

Maine

New Hampshire

  • Berlin Fencing and obstruction removal
  • Concord Terminal building
  • Haverhill Safety area and pavement maintenance
  • Nashua Golf ramp repaved
  • Manchester Major reconstruction of runway 17/35
  • Claremont Rehab runway 11/29, Obstacle removal to recover displaced threshold on Runway 11

Vermont

  • Burlington Rehab taxiway Alpha, Add taxiway Kilo to end of Runway, relocate PAPI
  • Franklin Reconstruct Runway 01/19, make it wider, and plan for future runway extension

It's an impressive list. But it accounts for only 4% of the national appropriation.

* Rhode Island has no construction projects for 2022, but lots of planning for 2023
I know, but this guy doing the flying has no airline experience at all. He's a menace to himself and everything else in the air. … Yes, birds too. --from the movie 'Airplane.'
