TFR over Cape starts Thursday 8/18/2011

George Clark writes: … There will be a TFR starting tomorrow - Thursday August 18, over the Cape and Islands due to President Obama's vacation. Like last year there will be some limited access to MVY by pre-screened General Aviation aircraft.

Note that TFR 1/1730 is an update to 1/1576 due to changes in screening procedures. Restrictions begin August 18, 2011 at 2030 UTC Of course this is subject to change.

Last year some pilots were busted because the TFR moved with the presidential travels. Formation flying with the military might be exciting but probably will ruin the day. Checking NOTAMS may not enough.

  • Check with FSS - get on the "tape" that you checked the TFR details
  • Check with ATC again if approaching anywhere near the TFR areas.
  • Better yet - flight following can help avoid inadvertent encounters
  • Don't depend on GPS to "fly the edge" of the TFR. GPS position and Radar might not agree.
Looking for an alternative to flying to the cape? The WAPA annual picnic / fly-out to GDM is this weekend. It will get underway around 11:00 AM. WAPA will provide burgers, dogs and drinks. The cookout coincides with a radio controlled model jet event at GDM.
