In Memoriam: Gregg Andrews

George Clark writes: … I'm deeply saddened to report that this morning, aviation lost one of it's great.

Gregg Andrews lost his life this morning a little before 9:00 am in the crash of a Piper PA-28 Warrior at Spencer Airport. Gregg was a great friend and always willing to help out another pilot in need. His love of aviation and life in general showed through with brilliance with every interaction I ever had with him. He died doing something that he loved to do.

This is terrible, I feel so bad for Gregg and his family. I can't believe it. He was a good friend, a kind and honest man. I have always had the highest respect for Gregg. Aviation in these parts will never be the same. He will be missed by all of us in many ways. This scares me, Gregg had vast experience and was a better pilot than most of us.I know now that I am going to have to reconsider my commitment to flying. Is it worth it ? …

On a personal note, Gregg was a truly great pilot. I always learned something when flying with him. The plane became part of him, and he would always put it right where he wanted it, and more importantly as an instructor he was able to share that knowledge clearly and concisely. He was our mechanic as well for many years and I was never in doubt of his expertise and advice. Flying will not be the same without him. My deepest condolences to his family.

I spent around 40 hours in a plane with Gregg getting my PP-ASEL, and more time in his hangar and home.

When someone teaches you to fly, you are not only trusting him with your life, but trusting him with the life of anyone who ever gets into an airplane with you.

The world is a smaller, poorer place now.

At Fitchburg one day, while I was learning to land, I came abeam the numbers and instead of pulling the power back i pulled the mixture knob.

The engine, of course, died.

With a rush of adrenaline I shoved the knob back in and the engine came back to cruising power.

I looked over at Gregg, who was calmly sitting with his hands in his lap, and he said: "I bet you'll never do that again, will ya?"

Obituary 12/24 Telegram & Gazette, Morin Funeral Home

Gregg Edward Andrews died at his home and business December 22nd in Spencer, Mass., doing what he loved most, flying his plane. Gregg was born June 15, 1960. He leaves his wife, Jennifer (O’Brien) Andrews of Spencer, his daughter Jaclyn, his son Eric, his sister Lynn Snelling and her husband David, niece Shannon Wolanski and nephew Ben Snelling. His parents, Duncan and Louise Andrews, predeceased him.

Gregg owned and operated the Spencer Airport which has been in the Andrews family since World War II. He was a member of Angel Flight NE, which arranges free flights to those in need of medical care.

Gregg was involved in many activities and loved spending time with his family and friends locally as well as at their camp in Greenville, ME. Besides being an accomplished pilot, Gregg also was an avid sportsman and loved a variety of outdoor sports including snowmobiling, hunting, skiing, four-wheeling, and sailing. He loved traveling around the country and visited Alaska a number of times in his airplane.

After he graduated from David Prouty High School he joined the army for a short term and then attended East Coast Aerotech . He followed in his father’s footsteps as a member of the Spencer Snowbirds, and was a member and treasurer of the Leicester Rod and Gun Club. Gregg and his family also assisted the Central MA Striders in many races including the Boston Marathon. He was a member of the Moosehead ATV Riders, Moosehead Riders snowmobile club, and the Moosehead Yacht Club.

He was heavily involved in aviation issues for small airports and worked closely with area legislators and the state to protect and preserve the need for these types of facilities. His efforts in this will be sorely missed by all who fly and use small local airports. He was a member of the AOPA, CPA, EAA, WAPA, the MA Assoc of Airport Managers, and Seaplane Pilots Association.

His positive can do attitude and smile were infectious. He loved and could fix anything that had a motor.

He left many close friends in and around the Spencer area and will be missed for his good humor and willingness to help in any way he could. He had a heart of gold and could always be counted on to help others in the community. He was the best Dad, husband, uncle, and friend any one could ask for.

In lieu of flowers, a trust for his children’s education has been set up at the Webster First Federal Credit Union called “The Gregg E. Andrews Memorial Fund”. You can mail donations to P.O. Box 70505, Worcester, MA 01607 or visit any branch of the Webster First Federal Credit Union to make a donation to the fund.
