Aviation Sales Tax Update

George Clark writes:

Update: Response to Dave Libbey from George Peterson, Minority Leader "The new bill that is being reported out of the Committee on Ways & Means today [April 10] doesn't include the aviation tax. Hopefully there will not be an amendment added to this, but if so, I would fight it. "

Word from the Mass Airport Managers Association is that the legislature has scheduled a vote on a bill that repeals the tax exemption Tomorrow April 10

Good morning,

We need your help! As some of you may know, the Massachusetts House of Representatives is tentatively scheduled to vote tomorrow, Thursday, April 11th, on a tax bill package (House Bill # 4645). Included in this tax bill package is the repeal of the current tax exemption on aircraft sales and aircraft parts. What this means is the 5% tax will once again be charged if someone buys a new aircraft or aircraft parts in MA. It is important to note and share with the legislators that all the bordering states of MA have followed the MA model of placing an exemption on aircraft sales tax and parts tax. If the proposed tax bill were approved, the Commonwealth of MA would be a significant competitive disadvantage with the bordering states. MA would lose more jobs. With every new corporate jet aircraft based in MA, there are 5 new jobs associated with that aircraft.

I would respectfully request that you call and e-mail the following state representatives and your respective state representative and ask them not to support the proposed language in the tax bill to repeal of the current sales tax exemption on aircraft sales and aircraft parts:

House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi
617-722-2500
Rep.SalvatoreDiMasi@hou.state.ma.us

Chairman Robert A. DeLeo, Ways and Means Committee
617-722-2990
Robert.DeLeo@state.ma.us

Chairman Joseph Wagner, Transportation Committee
617-722-2400
Rep.JosephWagner@hou.state.ma.us

When you call their respective offices, ask to speak to the staffer that deals with transportation issues. These calls and e-mails need to be made today or early tomorrow morning. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at 413-572-6275.

Thank you so much for your assistance in this matter.

Sincerely,

Chris Willenborg
