Wright Flyer at ORH

George writes: The Wright Flyer replica was on display at Worcester today for the WPI Homecoming Fly-In and celebration of 100 years of flight. The winds were not cooperating and it appeared doubtful that a flight would actually happen. However the winds died down and the Flyer made two flights down runway 11. The pilot explained that the winds needed to be right down the runway for the flight. The "Wing Warp" that served as a rudimentary Aileron creates very significant drag and adverse yaw. Turns with strong winds are difficult to handle.

The Wright Flyer was side-by-side with the Electric Airplane [Dead link!]. Jim Dunn was one of the featured speakers at the event, as were several student presentations on work being done at WPI.
