Jack Kvalita and a new Young Eagle

The weather forecast for Saturday was for 1500' ceilings all day. So around Noon on Friday we made the call to postpone to the Sunday Rain Date. Turns out that the weather was better than predicted, and we could have flown. But the decision had been made. Unfortunately word didn't get out and several cars showed up on Saturday looking for the event.

Sunday was by far the better of the two days. It was a bit cooler, with lower humidity, good visibility and light winds from the North. A perfect flying day. Pilots flying included Jack Kavalita, George Clark, Dewey Sasser, Marc Catanese, Cary Dillman and Jim Engberg. Ground support included Gregg Andrews, John Munn,Paul Horanzy and several others who's names escape me. Jack's wife Rosemary ran the registration desk. Of 17 families that showed up, we flew 15 new Young Eagles. See the Photo Gallery PhotoGallery2003x09x21x0 for more pictures.

For future events, we've come up with the following suggestions:

  • We should pre-register everyone so that we have a call-back number and contact if we have to postpone.
  • We should try to "slot" people into flight times, so that we can plan for pilot coverage.
  • We need a better way to sign up kids. Maybe a sign-up form on the web. Or a "sign-up" table at aviation and youth events.
  • Another sign-up opportunity would be the 4th of July event at Southbridge Airport.
  • Poster needs the Rain Date on it!
  • And we need some "fine print". Can the adults ride along, etc. So that there is no confusion.
  • And a personal reminder - remember to use Sun Block. I spent a few days this week looking like a raccoon with sunburn outlining my sunglasses.

Special thanks to Gregg Andrews for providing some short field instruction to pilots unfamiliar with Spencer, for hosting the event, and for bringing in Pizza and Soft Drinks for lunch.

I don't like flying because I'm afraid of crashing into a large mountain. I don't think Dramamine is going to help. --Kaffie, in the 1992 movie 'A Few Good Men.'
