Young Eagles

ALERT! Update: 9/15/07 Due to program changes at the EAA, WAPA is no longer permitted to conduct organized Young Eagle events. We will still attempt to assist interested WAPA EAA pilots to connect with the Young Eagle candidates who previously signed up for the event, but we will not directly organize a coordinated YE Rally. It will be up to the individual members to coordinate the ride for the Candidate.

Chris Kosak writes: … In 2004 WAPA pilots supported the Young Eagles program, and flew approximately 50 children of varying ages. We planned to do this in 2005 and 2006 but were unable to.

There are approximately 40 eager young boys and girls who wished to take part in a Young Eagles introductory flight during 2005 and 2006, and are still awaiting that opportunity. WAPA is seeking out volunteers meeting the Young Eagles requirements, to help fulfill these requests.

The guidelines that define volunteer pilot requirements can be reviewed at EAA Young Eagle Pilot Guidelines.

The FAA published a new rule on Feb 13th that revised the rules for commercial air tour and charitable, non profit or community events. An FAA Letter has since clarified that Young Eagles flights are not impacted by the new regulation.

I hope to find 10-20 pilots that are willing to take 2-4 children for the Young Eagles flight. The children would be flown one at a time. This introductory flight will be about 20 minutes in length and during the flight the children will be given the opportunity to manipulate the controls under the watchful eyes of the pilot. Before the flight, the children will be shown around the airplane with the pilot describing the parts of the aircraft and how they function. After the flight, a document suitable for framing will be given to the child attesting to the fact that they have flown on a Young Eagles flight.

Once we have our confirmed list of volunteers, and a confirmed list of children, we will arrange for contact and scheduling of the flight between the pilots and the children.

Thank you in advance for your participation. Your time with these children will leave a lasting positive impression as they experience the excitement and awe of their first flight under your guidance.

Thank you,

Chris Kosak
