New Hampshire Airport News

The AANH web is reporting that a recent study of New Hampshire airports finds that 5 of the 10 privately held public use airports in NH face sale within the next two years. Airport closures affect all of us and have a significant risk of changing the face of General Aviation as we know it today.

On a more positive note, (seen on the Cardinal Flyers e-mail digest) Bruce Hutchings reports that the Mount Washington Regional Airport see (Airnav info) will be undergoing a significant renovation to its runway this year.

Mt Washington Regional in Whitefield New Hampshire, will be getting its long awaited runway expansion this summer. Extending our runway from 3495' to 4001' with the entire length resurfaced, all new runway lighting, removal of the existing VASI in favor of a PAPI, expansion of "safety areas", new taxi ways and ramp area, and an overall sprucing up of our electrical systems.

At last night's Airport Commission meeting, the engineers reviewed their proposal for the work. In order to keep the airport open for business as much as possible, the project is being broken up into three phases with the final phase reclaiming, grading and resurfacing of the entire 4001 runway length. This phase is projected to take the longest, and in order to have to work done by November 1st (remember up here winter season starts early), the airport will have to be closed for most of September and October.
