July 2004 Safety Seminar on Air Traffic Control

George writes We had a great turnout at the July 1st Safety Seminar. Bradley Tracon, Worcester Tower, and Westfield were all represented at the meeting and had interesting tidbits and information to pass along. And as usual, Bob Martens did an excellent job giving us "food for thought" for the flying season.

Did you know...

  • You should not turn down Runway 33 after landing 29 unless specifically instructed to do so. Pilots have gotten used to that instruction and are creating traffic conflicts for Rwy 33.
  • The new BDL digital RADAR finally provides coverage East of ORH and below 3000 feet. Practice approaches are now managed by BDL instead of ORH. No longer will you be "Radar contact lost" when descending below 3000, and required separation for instrument aircraft has been reduced in the ORH area.
  • Even though ATC will occasionally act like you are wasting their time, it is always a good idea to give Tower or ATC a call when passing above a Class D or C airspace. You never know when a high performance aircraft with a steep climb gradient will be climbing out through the top of the protected airspace.
  • Tiedown + Hangar aircraft along Foxtrot… Pull up towards the "Movement Area" hold line prior to calling for taxi. You are in a blind spot so the tower cannot see you at the tiedown or hangar.
  • When on flight following, what do you do if you can't get ATC to answer and want to terminate services? Just squawk VFR - and that will let them know.
  • When ATC instructs you to hold short of a position on the airport, you must read-back the instruction. Don't make them ask…
  • When cleared for takeoff, ATC expects you to start rolling, and not sit on the runway. If you will need time, let them know before you taxi out. There may be someone on approach.

There were lots of other words of wisdom passed along at the meeting. What do you remember… hit the [read more...] link and then hit reply to share your comments. And, check out the Photo Gallery from the meeting.
