Changes coming in airport markings

At the Safety Seminar last Tuesday, May 20th, some new runway and taxiway markings were discussed. Here "Might be" one of them.

Take the poll located to the right, [poll removed] and then read the story for the answer, more information, and one more puzzle. The answer will be posted in a reply in a week or so.

The taxi-way center line will now be surrounded with dashed lines when leading up to a hold line. This makes it more obvious that you need to stop soon. Here is an example of an intersection at a taxi-way that leads to a hold line.

Here is one more change. There are 4 differences in the below picture compared to the normal runway hold line, one of which has already been described. (You can see this in place at the Providence Airport - they are the first airport to get the new markings). What are the 4 differences, and for extra credit, why?

If you attended the Safety Seminar and know the answers, please wait a bit to see if anyone else can identify the 4 changes.

Here's the answer

The four differences are:

  • The dashed taxiway centerline leading up to the hold line provide a warning that there is an upcoming hold line.
  • The hold line now extends completely across the taxiway, beyond the taxiway edge lines.
  • The dashed lines on the runway side of the hold line are white. This makes it more obvious which side of the hold line is part of the runway environment.
  • The red/white runway signs are painted on both sides of the taxiway. This makes it easier for both pilot and copilot in a large jet aircraft to see the signs.
