New Flight Procedures & Restrictions

AOPA and EAA are both reporting that several changes are coming Monday due to the new threat level Orange declared by the Department of Homeland Security. The reports here and here state that a new "Air Defense Identification Zone" (ADIZ) is being established around the capital. It will coincide with the Class B airspace, plus a 30 NM extension to the south of the DCA VOR. IFR or VFR flight plans are required, although EAA and AOPA appear to disagree as to whether or not air-file will be permitted. AOPA reports that 23 public use airports will be affected. Note: The three NOTAMS are now published. Check with FSS or the above links for further information.Updated: corrected link to EAA report - Feb 9 2003

In addition to this, all existing waivers for flight into the DC area are being cancelled and must be reapplied for, and new security procedures are being established for the DC3 airports, with TSA security screening prior to departure, and landing required at Lee airport for inspection prior to arrival Finally, all waivers granting stadium overflight for banner towing and news reporting are being suspended indefinitely.
